Calvados is a traditional spirit made of Cidre from the French region Normandy and is a classical digestif. The beginning of Calvados was in the 16th century. At that time only peasant would have drank this spirit. Since the 19th century Calvados raised to one of the best digestifes.
Calvados as well as Armagnac and Cognac is stored in oak barrels. The spirit is distilled in a continuous or a multiple procedure. With the velvety-mellow taste of old Calvados it remembers of Cognac. The younger one has a dry-sweet and fruity note. Usually Calvados matures 2-6 years and has an alcoholic strength of 45-50% vol.
Calvados belongs to the spirits which are secured through a certificate of origin with three different variations (Calvados, Calvados Pays d’Âuge and Calvados Domfrontais).
